New York Water Week took place from 18 – 24 March 2023.

What was the event about? And why does taking water action matter?

New York Water Week took place alongside a historic United Nations conference dedicated to water*, the first of its kind since 1977. The Water Week hosted creatives, businesses, cities, and water advocates outside of the conference halls, providing a unique opportunity to share knowledge and solutions that fed into the UN 2023 Water Conference.

Connecting the international conference audience with the city of New York, from its citizens and culture of innovation, to its pioneering approach to water management, the Water Week aimed to generate ambitious action and influence the Water Action Agenda.

Together we made 2023 a real watershed moment, let’s keep making waves for water.

Hands under running water stream

New York Water Week revolved
around three core themes:

Business Innovation and Water

Water Innovation
and Businesses

From start-ups to multi-nationals, we need innovators and creators from across the private sector to showcase best practice.

Youth Climate Activism

Youth and Education

Young people are important agents of change at a time when we must rethink our relationship with water. The role of curiosity, knowledge and education cannot be overstated.

Resilient Cities

Cities face many challenges, often feeling the impacts of extreme weather events most intensely, yet are a melting pot of creativity and innovation to develop scalable solutions.

Water management must be transformed to protect life on Earth

The global water cycle is dramatically changing, impacting all life on Earth. Last year, researchers discovered that we have surpassed the planetary boundary – or safe operating space – for water. Communities and biodiversity across the world are enduring the accelerating and disproportionate impacts of this reality, from flash floods to droughts and wildfires.

Water is also a powerful tool to tackle humanity’s greatest challenges, including the climate crisis, inequality and conflict. Recognition of water’s role in climate action is growing, with new evidence that it is significantly more important for climate change mitigation than previously thought.

In this decisive decade, every sector must profoundly change how they manage water to cope with growing variability, working in harmony with nature. We all depend on healthy watersheds and must do our part to protect them. The first step is to learn more about our own local watershed and how we are impacting it.

From the UN 2023 Water Conference onwards, we will keep on making waves for water, and drive concrete water action to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6: clean water and sanitation for all.
